Every July 29th, the migraine community observes Migraine Headache Awareness Day, a moment dedicated to recognizing the millions of people living with a disease that remains widely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. Migraine headaches are defined as 15 or more headache days per month for at least three months, affects a significant portion of the more than 1 billion people living with migraine worldwide, yet it remains one of the most invisible chronic illnesses in modern medicine.
Awareness matters because migraine people living with headaches face a unique combination of physical disability and social disbelief. Unlike visible conditions, migraine leaves no outward sign, which often leads to stigma, skepticism from employers and even loved ones, and delayed diagnosis. Many people living with migraine report feeling that others assume they are exaggerating or using migraine as an excuse, a misconception that awareness days exist specifically to correct.
